What is Romanesco?!

Is this edible? The first time I saw romanesco I thought it looked like a sea urchin! But, low and behold, it's a uniquely designed veggie with a lot of flavor and nutrients! You can eat it raw or steam it just like broccoli. There is a laundry list of health benefits including and not limited to:
  • improves vision and supports eyesight
  • protects from free radicals
  • improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • reduces constipation and depression
  • helps protect from colds and the flu

I took this picture of romanesco at a farmers market in Santa Monica. I thoroughly enjoy buying my produce fresh and knowing that my food is coming from a local source. That way I can ask the farmers/sellers questions about the way the food was grown or raised.  It also important to buy local because shipping food long distances creates the need for more time, energy and POLLUTION.

The less transporting of a product, the less need for special processing, packaging and pesticides! Also, transportation adds to the overall cost of the product. Manufactured products, if purchased locally, reduce the overall cost of production and thus reduces price of the goods. Let's be honest, we would all enjoy a less expensive grocery list!
